There are two mindsets here:
- A decision is more important than what you’ve done
- You can make whatever decision you’ve made important
I think the right way is you have to do them both, so you need to make a lot of important decisions and make whatever decision you make important, and to most people in most situations, all options suck so you have to focus on “make whatever decision you’ve made important”
So how to make whatever decision you’ve made important? It depends on how you execute all your decisions, and several principles from The Effective Executive by Peter Drucker is worthy of reference:
Pick the future as against the past;
Focus on opportunity rather than on problem;
Choose your own direction — rather than climb on the bandwagon; and
Aim high, aim for something that will make a difference, rather than for something that is “safe” and easy to do.
Under these principles, then follow these steps
- Make yourself more important every day
- Make the things you are doing more important every day
- Make the people around you more important every day
