When I learn English, I find recite words is a difficult job, I hardly remember a word not frequently use in daily life for a long time, always forget it in days or months, this makes me curious about what is memory in biology level, and how it works?
This is a very good review to my question:
There are three types of memories in biology level: short-term memory, intermediate-term memory and long-term memory
Short-term and intermediate-term memory parallels synaptic strengthening that lasts from minutes to hours, and long-term memory parallels synaptic strengthening that lasts from days to weeks
Chemical synapse is very fantastic, I read this from Wikipedia:
The adult human brain is estimated to contain from 10 ¹⁴ to 5×10 ¹⁴ (100-500 trillion) synapses. Every cubic millimeter of cerebral cortex contains roughly a billion (short scale, i.e. 109) of them. The number of synapses in the human cerebral cortex has separately been estimated at 0.15 quadrillion (150 trillion)
